There is nothing quite like the staying up until 1 a.m. ET watching Hawaii football. This year, we are blessed with a Hawaii home game in the literal first weekend of college football.
This is a rare game in which Vanderbilt will actually be favored in 2022, as the Commodores finished the 2021 season with a 2-10 record. They are unfortunate to be in the SEC where they face NFL talent on a weekly basis, but won’t be the case against this Hawaii team.
The Rainbow Warriors are in the midst of a total rebuild after a rough end to the 2021 season. In comes former Hawaii quarterback and campus legend Timmy Chang as the new head coach, who has a ton of work to do to get this Hawaii program headed in the right direction.
Hawaii was completely gutted in the transfer portal after the end of the 2021 season, as they only return four starters on offense and two on defense. While Vanderbilt isn’t close to the SEC’s elite, they still have SEC talent.
This Vandy team returns three starters along the offensive line, as well as quarterback Mike Wright. Wright, by the way, finished last year as the starting QB for Vanderbilt.
The only thing Hawaii has going for them is they are going to absolutely air it out on offense. This will come in handy going against a Vandy defense that was 101st in the nation in passing yards allowed last year. The Rainbow Warriors will have its moments passing the ball, even with all the turmoil surrounding the team.
Unfortunately for Hawaii, they had the worst defense in the Mountain West last year, and now they have to replace all but three starters. Vanderbilt and QB Mike White should have no problems moving the ball and putting up points in this matchup. I wouldn’t be surprised if they got to 40+ points.
So, with all this said, the best bet in this game is to take the over. The OddsJam Line has the total at 54 but thanks to line shopping on the OddsJam NCAAF odds page, we can get this total a half point lower at 53.5.
