We have two NHL games on Tuesday, May 9. In this betting preview, I’ll be running through two sharp bets for the Devils vs Hurricanes game.

Devils vs Hurricanes Betting Odds

As seen on the NHL Odds Page, the Hurricanes are best offered at +138 moneyline odds. The Devils are best offered at -145 odds.

NHL Betting Lines

Sports betting 101 is always getting the possible odds on all your picks. This is called line shopping, and it’s a pretty simple concept – if you’re placing bets at +120 on the Hurricanes moneyline when other books are offering +138 odds, then you’re getting ripped off.

Unsurprisingly, you won’t make money sports betting if you’re always getting ripped off. Imagine being an investor who has to pay 20% more for every stock you buy… You won’t stand a chance at making money. As sharp sports bettors, we have to find value in the market.

Pick #1: Devils Over 3.5 Team Total Goals at +150 Odds on Fliff Sportsbook

The first bet I’m on is Devils over 3.5 Team Total at +150 odds on Fliff sportsbook. The Devils had 8 goals on Sunday in Game 3…

I found this NHL betting pick on the OddsJam Positive EV Tool. The Positive EV Betting Tool is pretty simple – it just shows you value in the market. As seen in the screenshot below, the average “price” on the Devils over 3.5 Team Total is +136 odds. Getting +150 on Fliff is great value.

Finding value (e.g. great odds) may seem too simple, but it’s not. Value is the key to making money sports betting. All public information is baked into the market. Looking at historical data is pretty irrelevant as a sharp bettor – historical data is already reflected in the current odds on sportsbooks.

Sports betting is very similar to trading stocks. If a company has a fraud report, then the price of their stock will probably go down. That’s new information in the market, and it’s not good news. The point is – all public information is already reflected in sportsbook odds (injury news, lineup changes, weather forecasts, etc.). Looking at this information is, overall, irrelevant unless you think you’re smarter than every other sports bettor (e.g. “the market”).

I locked in the Devils o3.5 team total at +150 odds for $100 on Fliff sportsbook. I’m staking $100 to win $250.

Pick #2: Over 6.5 Goals in Devils vs Hurricanes at +160 Odds on Fliff Sportsbook

My second pick for Devils vs Hurricanes is over 6.5 goals at +160 odds on Fliff sportsbook. I also found this NHL bet on the OddsJam Positive EV Tool.

Value, value, value... As sharp bettors, we just follow the data & hunt for value in the market. Here, the average price on the over 6.5 total goals is +148 odds. We’re getting +160 on Fliff, which is clear value.

Over 99% of sports bettors find picks with their “gut” – if that’s you, then stop gambling for now… Over 99% of bettors also lose money on the sportsbooks long-term, and that’s because they think they’re “smarter” than the market and bet with their gut. It’s 2023, you should be betting with data… That’s how you make money.

I also locked this NHL pick in for $100. I’m staking $100 on Fliff for a total payout of $260.
