With each state setting its own regulations and restrictions, navigating the college sports betting landscape can be difficult. As we gear up for college football season, it’s important to understand the wagers you can or cannot place in your state.
In most states, even if college sports betting is legal, betting on individual player props is not. Most of these regulations were established before the rise of NIL. It remains to be seen what the rise of NIL and the unclear status of the NCAA as a whole, means for the future of college sports betting. But, what we know now is that most states that allow mobile sports betting, permit betting on college sports to some degree.
In the states that do not allow player props, sportsbooks are prohibited from offering wagers on any stats achieved by a player for an individual game. However, despite this restriction, end-of-season awards (such as the Heisman Trophy) are legal bets in those states.
Another common restriction is certain states do not allow wagering on a collegiate team from the state and restricts betting on a game taking place in that state; regardless if it’s two out-of-state teams. This restriction will be most noticed during bowl season and the NCAA basketball postseason tournaments.
For example, residents of New York could not place any wager on the Pinstripe Bowl or Big East and ACC basketball tournaments, regardless of the teams playing.
Michigan, West Virginia and Wyoming take home the prize for least restrictive college sports betting states. Those three states do not have any restrictions on games or player prop markets. But, if you’re a bettor in any other state, check out the table below for the most up-to-date restrictions and regulations in your state.
