The 2023 NFL Draft gets underway on Thursday, April 27, and it can be a bit confusing to figure out what bets you can place on it. Fortunately, we’re here to help you understand exactly what is possible in your state.
Betting on the NFL draft is different than betting on a game because a game is filled with hundreds of plays and thousands of split-second decisions. The draft, especially in the early part of it, is based on months of evaluation toward one decision.
Because of this, some states that have legal sports betting in general still limit the types of bets one can make on the draft.
Arizona allows betting on the NFL Draft, but all bets must be placed before the first round gets underway. There is no live betting.
Arkansas allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Colorado allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Illinois allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Indiana allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Iowa allows betting on the NFL Draft, but all bets must be placed at least 24 hours before the draft starts. The markets will close at that time, so there is no live betting.
Kansas allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Louisiana allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Maryland allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Massachusetts allows betting on the NFL Draft, but there are some restrictions. Bets on specific picks must be made at least two picks before, bets on any given round must be made before the round begins, and bets on the draft as a whole must be made before the draft gets underway.
Michigan allows betting on the NFL Draft, but there are some restrictions. Bets on specific picks must be made at least two picks before, bets on any given round must be made before the round begins, and bets on the draft as a whole must be made before the draft gets underway.
Mississippi allows betting on the NFL Draft, but only at a physical casino. There are no online sportsbooks in Mississippi.
Montana allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Nevada allows betting on the NFL Draft, but bets concerning a specific player must be placed over a day in advance of the beginning of the draft.
New Hampshire allows betting on the NFL Draft. Unfortunately for those in New Hampshire though, DraftKings is the only sportsbook in operation.
New Jersey allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Ohio allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Oregon allows betting on the NFL Draft, but just like New Hampshire, DraftKings is the only option for online bettors.
Tennessee allows betting on the NFL Draft, but there are some restrictions. Bets on specific picks must be made at least two picks before, bets on any given round must be made before the round begins, and bets on the draft as a whole must be made before the draft gets underway.
Washington, D.C. allows betting on the NFL Draft.
West Virginia allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Wyoming allows betting on the NFL Draft.
Connecticut allows online sports betting, but not for the NFL Draft.
New York allows online sports betting, but not for the NFL Draft.
Pennsylvania allows online sports betting, but not for the NFL Draft.
Virginia allows online sports betting, but not for the NFL Draft.
There are several different ways to bet on the NFL Draft, some of which are more creative than others.
Bettors can bet on specific players to be drafted at a certain pick all the way through the top 10 on DraftKings.
There’s also an option to bet on the over/under of a certain player’s draft position. For example, Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid has an over/under set at pick 24.5. If he’s drafted at No. 24 or better, the under cashes. If he falls below 25, the over cashes.
Bettors can also select over/unders on the number of players taken at a certain position during the first round, who will be drafted first in head-to-head matchups, and what order certain players will be selected in relation to others at their position.
Some sportsbooks also allow you to bet on how many players from a certain conference of college football will be drafted in the first round, as well as if Mr. Irrelevant (the last pick in the draft, which happened to be Brock Purdy last year) will be an offensive or defensive player.
Another option is to bet on which position any given team will select with their first pick.
